Hashtags are now Hyperlinks on Twitter.com

Just days after revealing a new followers page, Twitter has made another update to the twitter.com site. Now all hastags, not just those in search results, will be hyperlinks.

Hyperlinked hashtags been a standard in many of the popular Twitter clients such as Tweetdeck for a while

Hashtags are a community-driven convention for adding additional context and metadata to your tweets. They're like tags on Flickr, only added inline to your post. You create a hashtag simply by prefixing a word with a hash symbol: #hashtag.

Twitter's website has long trailed behind third party clients in advanced features. However there appears to have been an acceleration of development in recent months. The upgrade comes less than a day after twitter increased the number of API calls per hour.

It appears that once and for all, twitter has found stability, with the death of Micheal Jackson a testament to its efficiency rather than anything else.

Many other reputable sites were overwhelmed as people flocked to their computers to find out the latest news. Even Google and Wikipedia were unavailable for long periods.

Despite the Twitter homepage being unavailable for periods, the API was working constantly throughout the day, allowing third-party clients to function effectively.

The days of seeing the  fail whale as a trusty but belligerent friend may be gone.
